The kids are asking, your current dog seems bored, and deep down, you’re a little curious too. Before you make the call, here’s everything you need to know about welcoming a second pup into your home. 

What to expect if you get a second dog

A second dog can provide friendship, playtime, companionship, and someone to share your current puppy’s adventures with. However, just like people, every dog has their own personality, so it’s worth considering whether your current dog is likely to enjoy having a sibling.

Some dogs absolutely thrive with a playmate to live with. Others are quite happy being the centre of the universe. While they may enjoy meeting other dogs at the park, that doesn’t always mean they’ll want to share their home with one. So, here are some pointers that can help you determine whether your dog is likely to enjoy welcoming a sibling into the family.

Your dog might want a sibling if…

• They play well with other dogs and get excited around them
• They seem restless, bored, or clingy with you
• They’ve lived and stayed with another dog and there was no drama
• They’re laid-back with changes at home

Your dog might prefer being alone if…

• They get anxious or snappy around unfamiliar dogs
• They guard their food, toys, or spot on the couch
• They’ve had stressful experiences with other dogs before
• They’re very bonded to you and thrive on one-on-one attention

How to Prepare for a Second Puppy
So, you’ve decided to take the plunge? Exciting times ahead! Bringing a second puppy into your home is often much easier when you’ve already been through the puppy stage once before. However, a little preparation can go a long way towards helping both dogs settle into their new family dynamic.

Here’s how to set the whole family (including your dog) up for a smooth transition with Banksia Park Puppies!

Arrange a Meet and Greet

One of the unique benefits of choosing another Banksia Park Puppy is that we can often arrange a meet and greet between your current Banksia Park dog and your new puppy as your first meeting.

Once you have reserved a puppy and paid the $100 reservation fee, our Puppy Consultants will call you and help organise an appointment for your existing Banksia Park Puppy to visit and meet their potential new sibling. 

When booking your appointment, please let our team know about your current dog, including their breed, age, and temperament. This helps us plan the meet and greet appropriately and ensure the experience is as positive as possible for both dogs.

For biosecurity and safety reasons, meet and greets are generally limited to existing Banksia Park Puppies. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate all external dogs at our facility.

You’ll be able to bring along your existing Banksia Park Puppy and watch them meet their potential new sibling in a safe, controlled environment.

Our Puppy Consultants will observe the interaction and help answer any questions you may have. The good news is that these introductions are overwhelmingly successful. In fact, we’d estimate that over 99% of our puppy meet and greets go incredibly well, with most dogs showing curiosity, excitement, and a willingness to engage with their new companion.

Of course, every dog is different. Some become instant best friends, while others take a little longer to warm up to one another. That’s perfectly normal!

Bringing Your New Puppy Home

Even when the first meeting is a success, remember that relationships take time to develop. Your existing dog has had your home, your routine, and your attention all to themselves, so a period of adjustment is to be expected.

To help set both dogs up for success:

• Give each dog their own space to retreat to when needed.
• Supervise interactions during the first few days and weeks.
• Continue spending one-on-one time with your existing dog.
• Maintain routines around feeding, exercise, and bedtime where possible.
• Allow the relationship to develop naturally at its own pace.

Many families tell us that after a short settling-in period, they couldn’t imagine life any other way. What starts as a new puppy joining the family often becomes a friendship that lasts a lifetime.

Sharon and Chris’s Three Pups in the Pod

Sharon and Chris are one such family. They now have three Banksia Park Puppies – Mia, Tayla and Evie – and it’s been wonderful to watch their journey. 

Like many multi-dog households, the introductions took a little time. The dogs gradually got to know one another, settled into their new routine, and before long they became inseparable companions. Mia, Tayla, and Evie started off slowly, then they began to warm up with one another, and now they are like three peas in a pod—or in this case, three pups in a pod! 

“Just wanted to let you know that Tayla has settled in really well and is the new boss of the house. Mia is slowly warming up to her and Evie is just like a big teddy bear with her. She just graduated Junior Skills puppy training and was the only puppy who went through the tunnel of the obstacle course. She’s noisy, playful, cheeky, bossy and utterly perfect. We adore our 3 Banksia babies 🐾”

Updates like these mean so much to us. Not only do we love hearing how our puppies are growing and developing, but it’s also lovely to see the strong bonds that can form between dogs when introductions are managed carefully and everyone is given time to adjust.

Sharon and Chris’s Triple Treat

When families ask us whether adding another puppy is a good idea, we often think of Wendy and Jonathan. Wendy and Jonathan have been a part of the Banksia family for a while now with their three lovely puppies, they are Bonnie, Archie, and Evie!

These three were new to each other and it’s been wonderful to watch each new addition find their place in the household. When Evie arrived, she wasted no time making herself at home.

“Evie settled in instantly with Archie, our 16-month-old, who is now her BFF — the two of them play all day long. Bonnie is still warming up to her, and even the cat gets along just fine. We couldn’t be happier with our Banksia babies.” -Wendy and Jonathan, June 2025

Their puppies consist of different genders, Bonnie is a girl, Archie is a boy, and Evie is a girl. So far, they all get along, but just like siblings, they like to annoy one another too which is very normal. It sometimes is their way of showing affection too!

One thing we often see is that every dog adjusts differently. Some become instant best friends, while others take a little longer to decide that the new puppy might actually be alright after all. That’s completely normal.

What starts as cautious sniffing across the room often turns into shared naps on the couch, games of chase around the backyard, and a bond that lasts a lifetime.

Families sometimes worry that a second or third dog will create chaos. In reality, many tell us the opposite. Their dogs become companions for one another, helping to keep each other entertained, active and engaged.
